Even though the team lost their first game they have made a comeback winning their third game and having a complete blowout.
They were able to make this happen by getting rid of their nerves and allowing the new recruits to experience what it is like to lose a game and be on the girls’ varsity team for the very first time.
” I feel like we are trying to get the rest of our teammates warmed up especially the freshmen they have been expressing their nervousness towards us and I think they are starting to get a grip of what it is like to play a live game,” said junior Lauren Jordan.
Jordan also stated that at their last game the team really came together to bring a win. Providing support to one another as well as giving each other motivation to play at their hardest.
“Our passes were there; the teamwork was there. The bench was communicating well which is a huge factor to making sure we win and keeping the energy up every time as a team,” stated Jordan.
Players like freshman Briana Carrion were nervous due to the fact that it was their first year being on the girls’ varsity basketball team and believed that now having more experience they are able to contribute more to the team.
” I think I have improved because this is my first year on varsity and I believe that I can now read the court better and I am now starting to get use to it because this is my first year on the varsity team. I also feel like there is much more competition on varsity and a lot more games and I am still getting use to it,” explained freshman Briana Carrion.
The team was able to fix minor issues that they were facing in the game to have an amazing outcome in the end. Fixing these issues allowed the team to gain a new learning experience.
” I think the first half of the game we played scared a little bit because of past history with the game and we just had to fix minor issues with the game like communication with the team overall and I think we did that better in the second half and we should just continue that for now on,” addressed senior captain Karina Castillo.
The team also started off with a rocky start in the beginning of the game but was able to pick up where they left off and continue to persevere through the game to have the best possible outcome.
” I think I played okay; I definitely was a little rusty from last year, but definitely got back in the groove. I think we could have improved as a team; we made some little mental mistakes but, in the end, we know that we are just human,” said Carlee Johnson.
The team has been working on preparing for next season and at the same time working on getting better for this year. Due to the fact various seniors are leaving as they do every year, and it has made an impact on the team.
“Having both of the Karinas leaving I feel a little bit sad. But it is just sad every year because someone is leaving, someone important, someone who has made a strong impact on the team. But I feel sad, but I have to mentally and physically get better to improve for next season because we have a good player who is leaving that has made a good impact for this team but they both have. Next year is going to be a little bit worse since we do have like five seniors leaving,” explained Carrion.
