Megacon is a large convention mainly focused on pop culture (comics, anime, video games).
The convention is located in Orlando, Florida and over its 30 years running it has gained quite the following with a record attendance of 160,000 people, with some of those people even being students and staff at Four Corners.
Some students like to go to Megacon for the cosplaying aspect of it with many believing that getting to dress up as their favorite characters with their friends and family can be fun.
“I’ve been to Megacon many times ever since I was a kid. The last time I went to Megacon I went with a bunch of friends, and it was a blast, even if it’s kind of crowded sometimes. I think my favorite part of Megacon is just being able to dress up, especially dressing up as a group. I think it’s really fun. I know other students who like to go for the same reasons, and they also believe Megacon really is a good place to hang out with friends and be around everything you’re interested in that you usually wouldn’t see the rest of the year,” senior Anastasia Feliciano said.
Another thing that students go to Megacon for is for the celebrities that show up to the event yearly. This year some of the celebrities were Tom Hiddleston, Ewan McGregor, as well as Voice actors like Shameik Moore and Billy West (both known for their work on the Spider man films and Futurama). But the spectrum of guests that can go to the convention could extend from voice actors to screen actors to authors and artists.
“Megacon was very interesting, it felt like while I was there there was just about everything that I liked in one place. Along with that I felt that everyone there was so nice and overall, I had a great time. While I was there, I watched a panel with the cast of stranger things (which made me lose my mind a little) and along with that I also did a Disney trivia thing that I got prizes for and both of those were really fun. From what I can gather Megacon really tries to stay relevant and with the times so there’s always something that anyone can enjoy there,” sophomore Dylin Crane stated.
For some students, 2024 was their first year going to Megacon and due to its size and the amount of people it could be overwhelming for some, but that does not include 8th grader Ashton Seaman, who recounted the great time he had at Megacon.
“This year was my first going to MegaCon and it was a lot of fun. Me and my family mostly did a lot of shopping at the many different stands, but we also took pictures. The main thing I took away from going this year is that it’s just a great place to go be yourself without feeling judged or looked down upon and I would definitely go again 100%,” Seaman said.
Senior Jayden Barnes, details how he came out of his shell this year by cosplaying for the first time as one of his favorite characters from an animated show.
“This year Megacon was pretty strange but fun because I actually dressed up for the first time which was a little nerve racking. I cosplayed as Law from One Piece (even if there were a lot of others who did the same). However, it was still a great time. There was a lot of art, games, and so many things that could make you lose your head too. I think next year I’ll go with a bunch of friends and cosplay again although I’m not sure who I’ll be year,” Barnes stated.
Megacon is not just for students. There are also a plethora of teachers and staff who, like those students, have also gone to the convention and have formed their own opinions on the place.
“Megacon was amazing. There were a lot of people, but everyone was still very respectful. While I was there, I met Matthew Lewis and Jason Isaacs from Harry Potter and the voice actors for Megatron and Optimus Prime which was very exciting. I think Megacon is a very welcoming environment where people can meet some of their favorite people – maybe get spoiled a bit on their favorite shows – and overall can just have a blast. I’d definitely go again,” English teacher Mary Lewis stated.
