The month of March is Women’s History Month, people have taken these 31 days to celebrate the contributions women have made in history and to our society.
The month allowed people to recognize the specific achievements women have made and really consider what Women’s History Month meant to them.
“To me, Women’s History Month is acknowledging what women do for our world and it is more than just making babies and cooking, women actually have just [as much] an impact on the world as men,” junior Arianna Wright said.
Many women have made an impact in people’s lives such as mothers, public figures, family members, and others. These women create the foundation to inspire fellow women to do great things and achieve their goals.
“I find this month pretty great because I grew up with mostly women and I never had a father figure in the house so I looked up to my mom and when I saw all the stuff she would doing it opened up the world of women to me,” Wright said.
Women have gone through a great amount of work to better the path for other women who want to pursue a more unique career path like geometry teacher Yarira Clavijo, who was the only woman studying engineering in the college she attended.
“When I went into the engineering field, I was the only girl studying civil engineering in the college I attended in Puerto Rico, and we were 234 students, but I was the only girl. To me, it was something normal, but it wasn’t, I was discriminated against by the teachers, and my peers and it took me a long time to find a place,” Clavijo addressed.
For years now women have had to fight to gain their rights as well as their freedom. While this is not a problem in certain areas of the world, there are still places where women have to continue the fight for equal rights.
“I find this upsetting because even though we are women we are all still human and we should all have the right to be treated fairly regardless of our gender,” freshman Natalie Torres said.
To celebrate this holiday history teacher Craig Richman has given his classes a project in regard to Women’s History Month. This assignment will give students the opportunity to get a better understanding of women’s history.
“The project is about finding and researching a particular woman in women’s history that has advocated for change in society. Hopefully they should get a more thorough understanding of the kind of history that is out there that they don’t learn about on an everyday basis,” Craig stated.
One of the reasons why Richman gave this assignment to his students so that his female students in specific feel empowered by their history.
“I think that they should get a feeling of empowerment and that they are capable of doing many things. A lot of it depends on the work ethic that the other women are doing, and they can possibly emulate that in the future,” Craig said.
