“Within the short amount of time that I have been a staff member on the Coyote Chronicle, I have come to love what it has to offer. Despite the struggles with due dates, quotes, formatting, and interviewing, I really have grown attached to the journalism class of room 161. I love feeling ‘official’, and going to different events, and reporting through my writing about the happenings.
In my free time, my favorite thing to do is to write. I have been in love with writing since I was very young. Whenever I read a good book, I feel myself lingering over every poetic line of text, examining the language used by the authors, determined to someday recycle all of my knowledge of past literature into my own project. Now that I have more time to focus on doing what I love, I have been working on my own little book. The plot for my book has marinated in my mind for years, and I have only just now seriously considered focusing on that dream and making it a reality.
It is nearly indescribable, the joy I experience when writing. It feels like weight is lifted off my shoulders, and if no other factor in the world held me back from being an author as an adult, I wouldn’t hesitate to pursue it, but I worry that I may not hit the mark, and fail, leading to a slippery slope of a life.
Being able to take a class where I am graded upon what I am passionate about is very fulfilling, but naturally all the work doesn’t come easy. With all the work that me and my peers do, there are occasional class parties and fun opportunities that make me appreciate being on staff. At the very beginning of the year, we all had to undergo a sort of ‘journalism training’ to show us the ropes. When those 2 weeks of initial learning were over, we walked into a class party thrown by our editors, Kylie, Laura, Daniely, Kara, and Aniyah. There was food, drinks, party lights, and that day we enjoyed the end of our grace period, and the beginning of our time as official staff members,” freshman Jillian Nichter said.
