Middle school cheerleaders have finally had their time to show off their skills in this year’s tryouts, with that comes the many emotions these students felt in this process.
One student who fit the bill of many emotions was sixth grader Ava Fuller as this was her first time trying out. She felt nervous but also a bit confident at the prospect of tryouts.
“I think during tryouts while I was very nervous, I also felt a bit confident too. When I first found out about tryouts I thought that it’d be fun since it’s been something that’s been on my mind since I first came to this school and I really like cheering because not only is it fun and it makes me happy but I enjoy cheering for teams and making other people happy,” Fuller stated.
Some students that were on the team last year have tried out once again and are excited to see what could be different this season.
“Although I had already been on the team before when I first heard about tryouts, I felt kind of nervous, but as the tryouts started, I realized I began to become more confident in myself. This year I hope we can get uniforms and possibly go to away games and overall get to have more of the cheerleader experience. Overall, I’m very happy to have made it to the team this year as well and I think cheer it is something I want to do when I get older,” seventh grader Kamila Rodriguez explained.
Eighth grade Suleil Gautreaux has been on the team before, but is back for another season. She expects new things for herself and possibly her future as well.
“During the tryouts this time around, though I was still kind of nervous I also felt more confident since I had done it before. I tried out this year because last year I started to really like cheer, and it also helped me with my goal of becoming more active as well. This year I want to try harder with my jumps specifically and I’d just want to put a little more effort into my skills overall. I feel like continuing with cheer might help me be able get a scholarship and help me go to a good college,” Gautreaux said.
Students who tried out didn’t go without help though. The high school cheer team did their fair share of work supporting and helping the young cheerleaders when it came to practicing and giving it their all.
“I started cheerleading when I was around 10 and I started with a friend doing all-star cheer, but eventually I moved to Four Corners. I’ve been on the high school cheer team for a while and as I’ve helped them, everyone on the middle school team has definitely improved or showed their skills and I expect good things from them but also for them to have fun and for them to make friends and actually learn from their experience,” senior Hannah Murphy stated.
Since Murphy has been cheering for so long, she feels strongly about the new cheerleaders and helping them become more confident. She gives advice and words of encouragement to the younger cheerleaders.
Some advice I’d leave for the new cheerleaders is for them to put their head in the game while listening to their coach and just keep trying their hardest,”Murphy stated.
