National Football League (NFL) Tight End and three-time Super Bowl champ, Travis Kelce, and Pop-star Taylor Swift are engaged after two years of dating.
The couple shared a joint Instagram post on Tuesday featuring Kelce down on his knee proposing, with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married”.
With 1.2 million likes within the first ten minutes of the post, fans all over the world were going crazy.
“I jumped out my chair and fell to my knees screaming ‘OH MY GOD’, I was telling everyone we are up, Taylors engaged, we up. I was so excited and happy, I was thinking of the prophecy, I felt so happy, and I felt fireworks in my body,” junior Nyla Smith
When senior Kara Cohen took notice of the song that went along with the Instagram post So High School was Down Bad.
“Right away I took notice of the song because my phone had the volume all the way up so it just started playing. I was like awww this is so full circle,” Cohen said.
This post also gave fans a clear view of the engagement ring, which per a Vouge article, Kelce designed with Kindred Lubeck of Artifex Fine Jewelry. Even though there has been no official confirmation of the cost of the ring, it is believed to be worth up to $550,000.
“I’m not surprised they’re both multi-millionaires, actually Taylor is a billionaire, so the cost doesn’t surprise me,” Teacher and Coach Shannon Marino said.
Yet while the ring may have cost more than a coffee, it was not everyone’s cup of tea.
“It kind of looks like a beetle from the Egyptian times, and ‘is it green?’ It’s not eating, he did not clock it,” senior Matthew Lex stated.”
Swift is widely known for her tendency to plan out everything – up to years- in advance. With the announcement of her engagement exactly 13 days (the singers luck number) after the announcement of her newest album, The Life of a Showgirl, fans are wondering how long the couple have been engaged.
Several fans had speculated that the two had been engaged for longer, but in a recent interview, Ed Kelce, Kelce’s dad confirmed that the proposal happened around two weeks ago.
“Maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago. He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event. I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”
Eds announcement shocked many fans like senior Laura Escovedo, who had believed that this engagement took place further back.
“I was thinking that the proposal happened at the beginning of summer. I thought they were very close and very lovey dovey during the podcast episode, and it just seemed like they were extra happy about something. I also noticed they talked about how when Taylor got her Records back and she went into his room, so I assumed they were living together and had a feeling the next step was coming,” Escovedo said.
Escovedo also believes that the proposal was disappointing due to the lack of thorough planning that is believed to have happened.
“I was a little disappointed to be honest, Taylor is such a planner, so I thought her engagement would be super planned and full of meaningful things, so the fact that it was so sudden and so quick surprised me,” Escovedo explained.
Though this love story is experiencing a new chapter, it has been a long time coming. The couple met back in 2023 during Swifts Eras Tour when Kelce went on his podcast to tell the world about how much he wanted to meet Swift.
When their relationship first started, Swift told Times Magazine that she believed Kelce putting her on blast during Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce’s podcast, “New Heights” was “metal as hell”. Now Swift has gone on the podcast herself, making this a full circle moment for them.
“I think it’s super full circle and I’m really hoping there is a podcast episode of him explaining everything and how he felt and a breakdown of his thought process and how excited he is,” Smith said.
While Kelce could not put a friendship bracelet on Swift’s wrist, he did put a ring on her finger.
“This is the last ring that Kelce is ever gonna get,” senior Dan Tapia stated.
