Imagine this–Emma The Musical, a classic novel made by Jane Austen brought to life in song and acting form. A musical for all to experience, being performed by students of Four Corners Upper School(FCUS)
Emma The Musical is a romantic-comedy musical, performed at many high schools and theaters lasting around 2 hours. This year, FCUS has been given the chance to perform this musical.
“So we have a lot of powerful female voices and a lot of their voices were being used for male parts, so I wanted to use those voices for actual female parts and Emma had a lot of those,” Julie Gardieff–the director of the play–responded when asked what made her choose this particular musical.
The Emma musical consists of around 5 female roles out of the 9 main ones. Each one a crucial part of the musical. Some of the actors expressed their excitement with much enthusiasm.
“Im most excited for the choreography (or dancing) of the numbers but I’m also super excited for my own song, ‘Can’t Hurry Love’,” Alyssa Santiago put her excitement into words.
You Can’t Hurry Love is a classic song from the musical, expressing how love is something that takes time, and something that can’t be rushed. These songs from the musical drew the students to the Emma Musical.
“So we’re doing Emma now, and later we are going to be doing the Seussical. Originally the reaction for the Seussical was a lot bigger but later as they reached and what it was, their reaction slowly shifted towards Emma, so it was nice to see their reaction shift,” Gardieff explained.
Emma seems to draw the attention of many people, the original novel gaining much attention, although the total number of copies over the history of time is not known, the initial one for the first edition was around 2,000 copies. So when people heard of an Emma Musical haven known the classic, the rates surpassed imagination. However, what drew the students to the musical?
“Because I loved my previous experiences and love to learn about the plays,” Camila Nunez stated when asked why she chose to partake in the musical.
Like Nunez stated, many others echoed her response, seeming to be drawn to the musical for personal reasons.
“Truly, I participated in this new musical, Emma, because it not only sounded so fun but also portrays my personality (bright and bubbly) somehow,” Alyssa Santiago responded when asked the same question.
The enthusiasm from the students will carry on through their hard work. And of course, congrats to the cast for getting into the play! Though the date for the musical is currently unknown, people are still eager to see the play.
“In theater, sometimes we tell important stories, and sometimes it’s just for fun.” Gardieff stated, her words carried clear pleasure for theatre.
