When a fast-food chain names its newest combo the Meal of Misfortune, you are more prepared for disappointment, but Wendy’s collaboration with Netflix’s Wednesday is nothing but ironic delight. With its dark packaging and surprising taste, the meal is a nod to Nevermore Academy itself.
The meal includes “Rest in 10-piece Nuggets”, “Cursed and Crispy Fries”, a “Raven’s Blood Frosty”, and “secret sauces”. What makes the sauces unique is the uncertainty: there are four variations: “You Can’t Hyde,” “This Will Sting,” “Grave Mistake,” and “Nowhere to Woe”. Yet there are no labels on the cups. In my case, I received a brownish/purple sauce with a smoky heat that lingered (likely “Grave Mistake”) and a lighter pink/orange sauce with tangy sweetness (most likely “This Will Sting”). The unpredictability makes the nuggets feel like an experiment straight out of Nevermore’s science class rather than a snack.
Now, while the fries don’t scream gothic or mystery, neither does Enid; still, they serve their purpose perfectly: hot, golden, and salty, they balance out the sharpness from the spice of the sauces.
The star of the show was easily the “Raven’s Blood Frosty”. With the dark cherry flavor and its red/black coloring, it’s dramatic but refreshing. It provides a classic creamy taste but adds a berry twist. The theming is clever and does an amazing job of reminding you of all the creepy gore you may encounter during the show.
Though I just rambled on about how amazing the food was, true credit goes to the promotion and presentation of the meal. The bag the food comes in has a clever drawing of Wednesday’s iconic black dress and braided pigtails on it, a nod that sets the tone before you even look at the food. It’s spooky and stylish. The branding leans into the gothic style of the show, fully immersing you. Plus, the service was quick and the food was fresh, no misfortune there.
The value makes the meal even tastier. At $9.99, it’s cheaper than Wendy’s regular chicken combos and cheaper than many competitors. For a limited-time meal, it’s a steal.
The Meal of Misfortune is truly only unlucky in its name. Fans of Wednesday will love it, and if this is what misfortune tastes like, I would definitely order it again.
