Due to the growing use of electronics, such as Smart Phones, Tablets, and other devices have caused all users to become completely addicted to these devices.
There are many ways for people of all ages to have fun without looking at a screen all day. For example, they could volunteer in their community, play outside, hang out with friends, and do other activities than just stay at home on their devices.
“I believe that volunteering is a good thing as for example volunteering at the lower campus where we could be a good example to the elementary students,” senior Madison Schlegel said.
In recent years, increasingly large numbers of people under the age of 18 have been raised with a smartphone in their hand and other electronics in their homes and many don’t go outside compared to in the past. In some cases, these devices can be beneficial to their users if used in moderation but if they use their devices in a regulated manner, there would be a lesser chance of the user getting addicted to using their devices.
Some examples of harmful effects of excessive use of technology are decreased social interactions, physical and mental health issues such as depression, eating and drinking less, and reduced concentration and focus.
“I’m glad I got to be apart of something that does so much good even if it doesn’t seem like much. I feel like people don’t realize the significance that volunteering has, and how much of a difference just a small group of people can make,” junior Edsel De Jesus said.
Actions like volunteering can be good for those of us under the age of 18 to reduce dependence on electronics and can be beneficial to the community. For example, if a teen were to volunteer at their school or in the community, they would gain life skills such as being able to meet commitments and new skills and work experience.
“Student volunteering is a great amount of fun and is always a great experience. I love these volunteering opportunities because I love being able to give back to my school and my community and help build our events,” sophomore Ashton Seaman said.
Teens can also do things that they enjoy doing while helping make a difference within their community and through volunteering they can also leave their comfort zone as well as create connections that could open opportunities for future careers. It allows the teen to feel good after doing their volunteer work.
