The boys’ volleyball team debuts for the first time in Four Corners Upper School (FCUS) history.
Volleyball coaches Dianna Albitre and Laysha Colon held tryouts after school on March 3rd and callbacks on March 4th. The official team was announced on March 5th, which consists of Gabriel G., Jorge S., Herberto A., Sebastian M., Sovanin P., Ryan D., Steven F., Gustavo C., Nathaniel J. M., Savino G., Smauel B., Chase J., Juan F., Tao M., and Brody C.
In the list of sports offered here at FCUS, boys’ volleyball has never been an option until now. This was due to a lack of resources and a greater focus on girls’ volleyball.
“The past few years, we didn’t have a boys’ volleyball team for 2 reasons: one, we didn’t have a coach, and two, the other coach, the former coaches, and I were busy coaching girls’ volleyball. I know for me it’s harder to coach during this time because my daughter plays recreational volleyball, so it’s a bit harder for me to have balance with coaching and being a mom because I want to be there for my daughter; I like to dedicate that time to her and it usually clashes with boys’ volleyball,” volleyball Coach Dianna Albitre said.
The anticipation from many students was reflected in the number of people who attended the tryouts, demonstrating the high demand from the student body for a boys’ volleyball team.
“I was surprised to see the number of boys who actually showed up and had interest. I know that for 4 years they’ve been wanting to start a boys’ volleyball team, and I think a lot of boys were excited to finally have an opportunity to be in it. I want to give them the experience of actually playing volleyball; again, it’s taken years for us to form the volleyball team, and I want them to have that good experience. Hopefully, we can just build from here for the years to come,” Albitre stated.
This volleyball team has drawn attention to the sport and created new opportunities for all those interested in boys’ volleyball in the present and future of Four Corners Upper School.
