For the first time ever, Four Corners Upper School (FCUS) is introducing its first girls flag football team. With tryouts over, their first game is slowly approaching.
The girls’ flag football team had just recently started practice, and they continue to work hard as they face their first game soon.
“Practice has been very successful. I am very happy with our progress, especially as we really do not have any girls who have actually played flag football before. Every day is an improvement, and I am very proud of the girls for showing up and not giving up,” eEnglish teacher and coach Marie Betts said.
Whilst Coach Betts has expressed her optimism about the way practice has been going, players have stated similar things based on their own firsthand experience. The energy for the progress of their team is shared among the players and the coach.
“I love football, so joining the team is a great way to play the sport I’m passionate about and bond with new people,” Isabella Ledwez expressed.
Other teammates, such as Ledwez, expressed their excitement for the ongoing season.
“I’m most excited about hopefully getting picks in the game and getting a touchdown,” Allyson Turay stated.
As they proceed with their practices, they growo closer to reaching their goals, such as. Ones like winning their first game, getting a touchdown, etc.
“Goals for this season include, having the girls understand that they are a team and should hold each other accountable both on and off the field; have the girls understand the importance of being there for each other and never leaving a player/teammate behind. Become structured, disciplined, respectful, and above all role models for other students. On the field to understand the importance of dedication, hardwork and sportsmanship. And of course win as many games as possible,” Betts stated.
The team retaining a good relationship is extremely important, given how they must work together to win and much more. Some team members have expressed how their relationship in the team feels as of now.
“The start of the season has been really good because I’ve seen the team come together as a family,” Ledwez stated.
Their first game will be on March 65th, at 6:00 pm. The preparations have started and the team is hard at work.
”I am already so proud of my players. They are having to learn a brand new sport with the prospect of playing their first game in only about three weeks’ time. They are showing me that they want to be here and they want to learn. I am lucky that I have some very coachable players who are excited to learn and grow,” Betts expressed.
