The middle school talent show on April 12th gave students the opportunity to display their different and unique talents.

“I performed my own choreographed dance that was two minutes and 30 seconds and because I made it, it made me really nervous for the talent show,” 7th grader Layla Johnson, who performed a dance said.

Most of the performers were nervous to perform their act because of how many students, teachers and peers were there watching the show.

“I was really nervous I think it was mostly cause I was scared to see people’s reactions and like here what they thought,” 7th grader Julean Joshua who performed an original poem said.

Some performers’ nerves were better than others and believe that not being as nervous helped them with their routine.

“Umm I was nervous a little bit, but I did good to get into the talent show so it like made it a little bit easier and I wasn’t as nervous which I think made the routine better,” 6th grader Bolynn Bryant who played the flute said.

Some students who participated in the show like 6th grader Kayla Cowen who performed a Scottish-Highland sword dance already had experience in preforming for people.

“I perform in dance competitions, so I’m used to performing in front of people I just am not really used to doing in front of people who I go to school with so that was a bit weird,” Cowen said.

While students who took part in the show wanted to win most just cared about having fun while carrying out their routine.

“I definitely entered in for the reason of like wanting to have fun and to see what it would be like, but I still wanted to win,” Johnson said.

Lots of the students that performed had friends that were also in the talent show, thus encouraging healthy competition.

“I knew quite a few people I was competing against, and I wanted them to win and do good but at the same time I wanted to win so it was like a competition in a competition but in a good way,” Cowen said.

The show had many different acts, from dancing to playing the flute. All the performers had different ways of coming up with and producing their act.

“So, I’m in band and we have a concert coming up and I didn’t want to spoil any of the songs from that, so I thought why not just play a song from our last winter concert and that’s how I came up with the idea to play jingle bells on my flute, Bryant said.

While the talent show had multiple original and great acts there could only be three winners. In third place was Julean Joshua, who read an original poem about school challenges and was surprised when finding out she placed 3rd.

“I don’t know I was super surprised I really didn’t think that this poem I threw together during lunch would place top three,” Joshua said.

In second place came Kayla Cowen with her Scottish-Highland sword dance who was very happy when finding out she made it into the top three.

“It felt really good, and I was really happy that I placed in the top three and it’s kind of like made up for all the nerves and stuff,” Cowen said

In first place, the winner of the whole show was Layla Johnson with her dance routine that she choreographed by herself.

“I felt very shocked and surprised that I won because it was like the first ever time, I auditioned for anything, it was my first talent show or really any show or performance ever so to come in first was kind of crazy,” Johnson said.
