The Met Gala is a charity event fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It is organized by Vouge and their editor in chief Anna Wintour.

To attend the Met Gala, the celebrity must be on a specially curated list approved by Anna Wintour. Invites are typically based on a person’s celebrity status and the gala usually hosts up to 600 attendees.

In 2013, roughly $9 Million was raised. While this year’s Met Gala has yet to release their earnings, according to AP News, over $17 Million dollars was raised in 2022 setting a record for how much money the gala has ever raised.

The theme of the 2023 Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” in honor of Karl Lagerfeld, who died on February 19^th, 2019. Lagerfeld is best known for the position of creative director at Chanel from 1967.

“I feel like they really need to get everyone on board with the themes because they’re always kind of all over the place. There have been a few years where people have talked about where everyone follows the theme very closely, but they need to be more specific with what they’re doing,” Band Director Mr. Jeremy Jones said.

The Met Gala takes place in Manhattan, New York and usually about 600 celebrities are invited. The event showcased celebrities including Cardi B, Lil Naz X, Doja Cat, Bad Bunny, The Kardashians/ Jenners, Billie Eilish, Jared Leto, and many more celebrities with outfits that each made big statements of their own.

“The best dressed, hands down, would definitely be Jared Leto or Doja Cat. I like how they took life like things and made it into a cat. And they really just made it their own. A Lifesize cat suit and a person conforming to their name, I just like the idea of it,” Senior Walker Luc said.

Not everyone enjoyed the cat-like looks. There are many mixed opinions on Doja Cat and Jared Leto’s looks, some expressed their interest in their designs and interpretations of the theme. Others did not agree so much.

“Personally, I liked Russell Westbrooke. Although, I did not like Doja Cat’s outfit, it reminded me of the Cat in The Hat movie, which I did not like as a kid,” Band Director Mr. Jeremy Jones said.

This year’s fashion show showcased classic looks and bold statements from each of the celebrity guests. The gala attempted to honor Lagerfeld’s legacy as he was the designer who set the precedent for luxury brands like Fendi and Chanel.

“I liked Jackson Wang, he actually dressed up as Karl Lagerfeld. Most people didn’t even dress according to the actual theme. It was cool for the people who paid homage to Karl Lagerfeld and actually understood what he did and who he was,” Senior Samuel Kirby said.
